Here I've pulled together some sites that you may find to be of interest... they're not in any particular order of preference as they're all good :-)
If you want to find out more about the American pilots of 506th & 508th Squadrons & 404th Fighter Group, then you need to head over to
John Levesley's pages which detail their time at Winkton Advance Landing Ground near Bournemouth on the South Coast of England; there's also a copy of the history of the Fighter Group on these pages that makes for interesting reading
John Harder flew his last mission before being captured from
RAF Harrowbeer in Devon. Stephen Fryer has put together an interesting website recording the history of this station & was one of the links in the chain of events leading to my initial contact with John Harder's family.
Also of great interest in the "Harder" story is the
RAF Museum at Hendon. It's a fantastic place to visit if you're in the area (and even if you're not, it's worth the trip!) & if you want to do some research into a relative's RAF history, then their DORIS department may be able to assist. They also have copies of the information that I've researched in respect of John Harder. For reference, they have been designated in their catalogue as X004-6012/011 (first log book), X004-6012/012 (second log book) and X004-6012/013 (PoW journal). They have been electronically linked to the main Flt Lt John Worthington Harder Collection - X004-6016 - in their catalogue, so anyone coming across one part of the collection will automatically be made aware of all the other pieces. If you need specific halp, then Stuart Hadaway (one of the Assistant Curators) has been really helpful in pulling together information.
If these pages have stirred some interest & you'd like to read more stories about the "Greatest Generation", then there are two sites that I can definitely recommend. The first is the
People's War pages on the BBC Website; the second is a site pulled together by Frank Everards -
D Day, Normandy & Beyond. So far, Frank has pulled together well over 200 veterans stories from the Second World War.
